Greenbelt Challenge 2018 – Dead Zone Timing 30K
Dear Runners,
The Greenbelt Challenge is 3 weeks away and over the last month the Operational Team have been faced with some complexities along the Linear Course, due to the Torrens 2 Torrens upgrade and 8 Councils.
THE ISSUE
Despite many meetings, phone calls and problem-solving we have a situation with the extensive roadworks and bridgeworks at the South Road Thebarton Linear Path. The Linear path under South Road is closed and consequently, Greenbelt runners no longer have an uninterrupted westbound route.
The Torrens 2 Torrens contractors have detoured pedestrians and cycle traffic 330m south on the east footpath of South Road to use the traffic lights at West Thebarton Road to cross South Road.
THE DEAD ZONE TIMING SOLUTION
Greenbelt runners can use this detour, but will be stopped for variable time periods at the traffic lights as they arrive at different times and then depart at different times depending on the traffic light cycle. To make it fair for everyone and provide a legitimate competition despite the path closure problem, Event Strategies will set up timing points on the east and west sides of South Road; the precise times runners are stopped will be deducted from their total race times.
Details:
This precise time is called a “Dead Zone” and is often used at events like this or where it might be unsafe for entrants to race a route segment eg a mountain bike race where there is no option but to bring riders through some city or suburban roads before re-joining trails.
These Dead Zone times will be imported “live” to the finish line so all results will still be instant.
30K RUNNERS
The Operational team have made every attempt to ensure that all runners will be safe and have a great experience completing the 30km course.
It has been agreed that only the 30km runners will run Point to Point along the Linear Path, and the 30K event course capacity will be increased from 150 to a total of 250 entrants.
These additional 100 entries will be opened at 5pm on Wednesday 4th July. Once the 250 positions are exhausted, no more will be available. This is to ensure the safety of all entrants and effective management of logistics through the Dead Zone area.
21K RUNNERS
The Course for the 21k Runners will now start at West Beach and go up the Linear Path, turn around and head back to West Beach. A new adjusted course map is expected to be finished by 4th July, but please be patient with our small team, and regularly check our Facebook and Web Page for more details.
10K, 5K and Kids Fun Run
No course changes have been made to these distances.

Additional medal orders have been arranged to ensure all participants receive Bling. Lee-Ann (Office Coordinator) will be contacting all 30km entrants who entered the No Medal Category over the coming week.

If you have entered after Early Bird, dates on which you can collect your medal will be EMAILED to you AFTER the event.
